چکیده

A sensitive search for CO emission from the Low Surface Brightness Galaxy Malin 1 has yielded negative results. The nucleus and several positions corresponding to regions of star formation in the disk were observed in the CO(1– 0) and CO(2–1) lines with no detection. Use of a " standard " N (H 2)/I CO(1−0) conversion factor yields M H2 /M HI < 0.03. However, rather than argue that there is very little molecular gas in Malin 1, where some star formation is currently taking place, we attribute the non-detection chiefly to the low temperature of the gas. Detection of CO may be rendered still more difficult by a subsolar metallicity.

The First Co Map of a Low Surface Brightness Galaxy

Using the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Millimeter-Wavelength Array (OVRO) we have obtained the first CO map of a low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy. The studied galaxy, UGC 01922, was chosen for these observations because both of its previous CO detection with the IRAM 30m telescope and its classification as a Malin 1 ‘cousin’ – an LSB galaxy with MHI ≥ 10 10 M⊙. The OVRO map detected approx...

Further Discoveries of CO in Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

Using the IRAM 30m telescope we have obtained seven new, deep CO J(1−0) and J(2−1) observations of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies. Five of the galaxies have no CO detected to extremely low limits (0.1 – 0.4 K km s−1 at J(1−0)), while two of the galaxies, UGC 01922 and UGC 12289, have clear detections in both line transitions. When these observations are combined with all previous CO obse...

Co Detection and Millimeter Continuum Emission from Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

We present BIMA and IRAM CO (1–0) observations of seven low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies, including three large spiral galaxies with faint disks but prominent bulges and four relatively small LSB galaxies with irregular disks. The giant LSB galaxies are UGC 5709, UGC 6614, and F568-6 (Malin 2). The smaller LSB galaxies are NGC 5585, UGC 4115, UGC 5209, and F583-1. The galaxies were selecte...

A Normal Stellar Disk in the Galaxy Malin 1

Since its discovery, Malin 1 has been considered the prototype and most extreme example of the class of giant low surface brightness disk galaxies. Examination of an archival Hubble Space Telescope I-band image reveals that Malin 1 contains a normal stellar disk that was not previously recognized, having a central I-band surface brightness of µ 0 = 20.1 mag arcsec −2 and a scale length of 4.8 k...
